Ende der 80er Jahre treffen sich zwei fünfzehnjährige Jungs

beiden, die aber bald auch mehr als das wird… mehr möchte ich zum Inhalt von
„Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe“ von Benjamin Alire
Sáenz gar nicht sagen, denn meiner Meinung nach sollte man in die Geschichte
eher reingehen, ohne viel darüber zu wissen.
Thema
Besonders in
letzter Zeit findet man auf dem Markt immer mehr Bücher, die sich mit dem Thema
Homosexualität in Verbindung mit Identitätsfindung beziehungsweise der
Beseitigung von Vorurteilen auseinandersetzen, insofern spricht der Roman nicht
unbedingt ein nie vorher dagewesenes Motiv an.
Dennoch hat das Thema „Schwul sein“ und vor allem, wie bestimmte Menschen darauf reagieren, immer noch große Relevanz und kann, finde ich, nie oft genug Gegenstand moderner Jugendliteratur sein.

Somit bietet
„Aristotle and Dante“ nicht nur einen wunderschönen Jugendroman zum mal schnell
lesen, sondern auch Stoff zum Nachdenken mit einer aktuellen Thematik.
Umsetzung
Im Prinzip
habe ich das Buch in zwei Sitzungen gelesen, wodurch man erstens schlussfolgern
kann, dass es kein schwerer Lesestoff war und sich der gut und flüssig lesen
ließ, aber zweitens auch, dass mich die Geschichte unglaublich gepackt hat,
sobald ich einmal mit dem Lesen begonnen hatte.
Zugegebenermaßen
hat man in „Aristotle and Dante“ nicht besonders viel Handlung, da die
Geschichte mehr von den Protagonisten vorangetrieben wird, aber trotzdem war
ich nie gelangweilt beim Lesen. Wer mehr auf actiongeladene Bücher steht, ist
mit „Aristotle and Dante“ vielleicht an der falschen Adresse, aber für jeden,
der tiefgründige Protagonisten zum Liebhaben braucht, ist das Buch sicher genau
das richtige.
Schreibstil
Insgesamt
hat Benjamin Alire Sáenz einen eher lyrischen Schreibstil, der sich aber eher
durch Simplizität als metaphorisch-adjektivische Beschreibungen auszeichnet. Ich
mochte die Art, wie vielschichtig manche Sätze waren, sodass man (ähnlich wie
in Gedichten) öfter auch mal über die Bedeutung sinnieren konnte.
Dennoch las
sich das Buch sehr schnell und flüssig und man versteht auch die Handlung, ohne
großartig interpretieren zu müssen. Wer allerdings Lyrik zu schätzen weiß, wird
sicher Gefallen an diesem Schreibstil finden.
Charaktere
Wie schon
gesagt, wird die Handlung in „Aristotle and Dante“ vor allem durch die zwei
Protagonisten vorangetrieben, die beide auf ihre eigene Art sehr besonders und
liebenswert sind.
Ari ist eher
schweigsam und hat Probleme, sich seinen Mitmenschen zu öffnen, während Dante
gerne auf andere zugeht und seine besonderen und ungewöhnlichen Seiten begrüßt.
In der
Hinsicht sind die beiden wie Feuer und Wasser, aber irgendwie funktioniert ihre
Beziehung gerade deswegen so gut. Es ist schwierig, viel über sie zu sagen,
ohne das Buch zu spoilern, aber allgemein gefasst kann man sagen, dass Ari und
Dante sehr sorgfältig ausgefeilte und tiefgründige Charaktere sind, die man
sofort ins Herz schließt.
Was mir auch
positiv an dem Buch aufgefallen ist, ist die Beziehung der Jungs zu ihren
Eltern. Während man sonst oft in Jugendromanen eine gestörte
Eltern-Kind-Beziehung vorfindet, sind diese hier eher genau das Gegenteil, was
mir sehr gefallen hat.
Emotionen
Man kommt
definitiv nicht an „Aristotle and Dante“ vorbei, ohne mindestens einmal zu
lachen und zu weinen. Von Anfang bis Ende hab ich mitgefühlt und konnte nicht
umhin, mich sowohl in die Geschichte als auch die Charaktere zu verlieben.
Insgesamt
Alles in
allem hab ich das Gefühl, in „Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the
Universe“ wirklich einen neuen Favoriten gefunden zu haben. Das Buch konnte mir
alles geben, was ich mir je von einer Geschichte erhoffen könnte: Charaktere
zum Liebhaben, Gefühle ohne Ende und natürlich den Wunsch, das Buch nicht mehr
aus der Hand legen zu wollen… denn wenn wir mal ehrlich sind, sind das doch die
besten Bücher – die, bei denen man nicht mehr aufhören kann.

It’s 1987 and two fifteen year old
boys meet in the swimming pool. Dante can swim, Ari can’t. Dante teaches Ari
how to swim and as time goes by a deep friendship begins to form between them…
but maybe it’s also more than friendship…
That’s actually all I want to say
about the plot of „Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe“ by
Benjamin Alire Sáenz because I think you should go into the story not knowing a
lot… it’s just that kind of book.
Theme
Over the last couple of years you
can find more and more books dealing with homosexuality in connection with the
search for identity or the elimination of prejudice. Hence, the novel doesn’t
deal with an issue totally unknown. Nevertheless, how certain people react to
homosexuality is still an issue that needs to be discussed more often in modern
literature and that I will never be tired of seeing in YA.
Thus, “Aristotle and Dante” isn’t
just a beautiful YA novel but also covers a current topic that gives you
something to think about.
Realization
I actually read the book within two
sittings which leads to the conclusion that, first of all, it’s really easy to
get through and secondly, that the story completely gripped and thrilled me
once I started reading.
Admittedly, “Aristotle and Dante” is
rather driven by the characters than the plot but nevertheless I’ve never been
bored reading the book. For someone who is rather intrigued by action packed
books, “Aristotle and Dante” maybe isn’t the right book but everyone who needs
profound and loveable protagonists should definitely read it!
Writing
Benjamin Alire Sáenz‘ writing is
rather lyrical, but more characterized by simplicity rather than
figurative-adjective descriptions. I liked the way how profound some lines were
so that (similar to how you read poetry) you could really think about their
meaning.
Nevertheless the book was really
easy to read and you will definitely understand what’s going on even if you don’t interpret
anything.
But I’m sure every poetry lover will
like the writing in this book.
Characters
As I said before, „Aristotle and
Dante“ is a rather character driven story so both of the characters seem really
well sketched and are the main reason why I love this book so much.
Both of them are special and
loveable in their own way although they’re quite different from one another.
While Ari is a rather quiet person
and has problems approaching other people and making friends, Dante is outgoing
and embraces his weirdness.
In this regard the two of them are
like fire and water but still their relationships kind of works out – maybe even
because of that. It’s difficult to say a lot about the characters in the book
without spoiling the entire story but in general you can say that Ari and Dante
are very thoroughly elaborate and profound characters that you immediately fall
in love with.
Another thing that stood out to me
in a positive way was Aris and Dantes relationships to their parents. While you
often find a disturbed parent-child-relationship in YA literature, in “Aristotle
and Dante” it was the complete opposite which I really liked.
Emotions
You will definitely not get out of
reading “Aristotle and Dante” without shedding the one or other tear and also
laughing at some lines or situations. From the beginning till the end I was
emotionally attached to the story and couldn’t help but fall in love with both
the story and the characters.
All in all
Altogether, I feel like I found a
new favourite in „Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe“.
The book could give me everything I ever dreamed of finding in a story:
loveable characters, never-ending emotions and of course the wish of the story
never coming to an end… and if we’re being honest, those are the best books –
that you can’t stop reading.
