Inhalt

„Liebe mit zwei Unbekannten“ ist meiner Meinung nach schwer in ein Genre einzuordnen – Liebesroman ist wohl noch am passendsten, allerdings bedient das Buch keines der mir bekannten, für Liebesromane typischen Klischees, deren man mittlerweile schon so überdrüssig ist.

Antoine Laurain erzählt die Geschichte von Laure und Laurent, die sich so gar nicht auf dem üblichen Wege kennenlernen – nämlich eigentlich überhaupt nicht.

Laurent findet die Handtasche, die Laure geklaut wurde, und mit ihr ein rotes Notizbuch, in das Laure sich sämtliche Gedanken notiert hat. Abgesehen davon finden sich allerdings kaum Hinweise auf ihre Identität in der Tasche.

Laurent aber ist merkwürdig fasziniert von der geheimnisvollen Besitzerin der Handtasche und versucht alles, sie  zu finden.

Thema

Wie schon gesagt – Liebesromane sind nicht Neues. Eine Geschichte von zwei Menschen, die sich ineinander verlieben. Viel Spielraum gibt es da nicht und die meisten Liebesromane folgen immer wieder dem gleichen Schema.

„Liebe mit zwei Unbekannten“ jedoch ist da ganz anders.
Die Tatsache, dass die beiden Protagonisten sich nicht kennen, macht die Geschichte besonders und hebt sie von anderen Romanzen ab.

In der Hinsicht ist das Buch wirklich typisch französisch – irgendwie extravagant, aber auf eine niedliche Art.

Umsetzung

Ehrlich gesagt habe ich das Buch mehr oder weniger in einem Rutsch gelesen – und das sagt doch eigentlich alles, oder?

An keiner Stelle fand ich es langweilig, ich wollte immer unbedingt wissen, wie es weitergeht und fühlte mich auch von Anfang an wohl mit der Atmosphäre, die der Autor erschuf.

Das Buch hat nur 240 Seiten, aber man konnte sich trotzdem wunderbar hineinversetzen und hatte das Gefühl, über alte Freunde zu lesen.

Schreibstil

Auch der Antoine Laurains Schreibstil ist für mich absolut typisch französisch – anders kann man es wirklich nicht ausdrücken – etwas extravagant, aber trotzdem auf eine Art liebevoll, die einem das Herz buchstäblich erwärmt. „Liebe mit zwei Unbekannten“ war nicht unbedingt so extravagant im Schreibstil, wie man es vielleicht von anderen französischen Büchern gewöhnt ist – aber das hat höchstens zur Flüssigkeit des Textes beigetragen und keinesfalls dem Schreibstil Abbruch getan.

Insgesamt ließ es sich sehr angenehm lesen.

Charaktere

Auf 240 Seiten hat man normalerweise nicht allzu viel Zeit, Charaktere bildhaft darzustellen, aber Antoine Laurain ist es trotzdem gelungen. Mit ihren Ecken und Kanten und (ha! Hier wieder typisch französischen) ihrer herzlichen, sehr einzigartigen Art, hätte man sie nicht besser zeichnen können.

Laurent ist ein bisschen in die Jahre gekommen, geduldiger Vater einer exzentrischen Teenagertochter, liebenswürdiger Buchliebhaber und beweist Charakterstärke und Ausdauer, indem er vehement und nur auf der Grundlage ihres Notizbuchs nach einer Frau sucht, die er nie zuvor getroffen hat.

Laure lernt man als Leser nicht ganz so gut kennen (aus einem bestimmten Grund, den ich aber aufgrund von Spoileralarm nicht nennen möchte), dennoch ist sie mir ans Herz gewachsen. Eine Katzenlady, die es nicht immer einfach hatte im Leben, aber mit Leib und Seele ihrem Beruf verschrieben ist und Bücher ebenso zu lieben scheint wie Laurent.

Wie schon gesagt, hat man mit der Zeit beim Lesen wirklich das Gefühl, auf alte Freunde zu treffen.  

Emotionen

Was mir bei vielen, eigentlich sehr guten Büchern fehlt, sind die Emotionen. Manchmal schafft es der Autor auch nach 500 Seiten bei mir nicht, auch nur irgendeine Sympathie für die Protagonisten zu erwecken. „Liebe mit zwei Unbekannten“ hat es aber definitiv geschafft.

Der Roman ist auf jeden Fall ein Wohlfühlbuch; eines, mit dem man sich einen Abend lang vor dem Kamin gemütlich machen kann und das einen zwischendurch immer mal lächeln lässt.

Damit hat es als Liebesroman definitiv seine Funktion erfüllt und lässt mich immer noch mit einem Schmunzeln zurück.

Insgesamt

Alles in allem ist „Liebe mit zwei Unbekannten“ eine Empfehlung für jeden, der eher ein ruhigeres Buch lesen möchte, worüber man nicht viel nachdenken muss, das aber trotzdem wunderschön und ein besonderes Leseerlebnis ist.

Plot

In my opinion, „The Red Notebook“ is hard to put in a genre – romance would probably fit best although the book doesn’t serve up to those typical clichés that you find in almost any romance and that everyone’s already grown tired of.

Antoine Laurain tells the story of Laure and Laurent who don’t meet the usual way – because actually they don’t meet at all.

Laurent finds the handbag that was stolen from Laure and with that also her red notebook in which Laure wrote down all of her thoughts. Apart from that, there are no clues on her identity.

But Laurent is oddly fascinated by the mysterious handbag’s owner and tries everything to find her.

Theme

Like I said – romances aren’t anything new: A story of two human beings falling in love. There’s not much range and most romances follow the same scheme.

“The Red Notebook” is different though. The fact that the main protagonists don’t know each other makes the story stand out from other romances.

In this regard, the book is typically French – kind of extravagant but in a cute way.

Realization

Honestly speaking, I read the book just in one sitting – and that kind of says everything, doesn’t it?

At no point I was bored by the story, I always wanted to know how it was going on and from the beginning on, I felt comfortable with the atmosphere the author created.

The book only has 240 pages but you could easily familiarize with the characters and I felt like I was reading about old friends.

Writing

Also Antoine Laurain’s writing is typically French to me – you can’t really express it differently: a bit extravagant but still lovely in a way that literally warms your heart. “The Red Notebook” wasn’t that extravagant in its writing that you’re maybe used to from other French authors – but this just contributed to the fluency of the text and didn’t spoil the writing.

All in all, the book was pleasant to read.

Characters

Normally, you don’t have that much space on just 240 pages to portray characters vividly but somehow Antoine Laurain managed to sketch them perfectly with all of their flaws and edges and their kind but yet unique nature.

Laurent isn’t quite so young anymore, he’s father of an eccentric teenage daughter, a passionate and friendly bookseller and proofs his character strength and persistence by vehemently and just because of what he read in her notebook looking for a woman he’s never met before.

As a reader, you don’t get to know Laure quite as well as Laurent but still she grew dear to my heart. She is a cat lady who didn’t always have such an easy life but who is wholeheartedly devoted to her job and seems to love books as much as Laurent.

The character’s portraying really makes you feel like meeting old friends.

Emotions

To me, emotions add that certain “je ne sais quoi” to a story and are therefore one of the most important valuation provisions in rating a book. Sometimes an author can’t manage to evoke any sympathy towards the protagonists in me but “The Red Notebook” definitely did.

The novel is a feel-good-book; one that you can binge read, cosily tucked in a blanket in front of the fireplace and that makes you smile from time to time.

With that, the book absolutely fulfilled its function as a romance and still leaves me with a smile on my lips.

All in all

To put it all in a nutshell, „The Red Notebook“ is a recommendation for everyone wanting to read a rather quiet and peaceful book that you don’t really have to think about and that is still beautiful and a unique reading experience.
