Umsetzung
Insgesamt
hab ich einen ganzen Monat gebraucht, um „Der Nachtzirkus“ zu lesen, was für
meine Verhältnisse unglaublich lange ist, da ich sonst für ein Buch dieser
Länge höchstens eine Woche brauche.
Ich kann
zwar nicht behaupten, dass es mir nicht gefallen hätte, nur fiel es mir anfangs
unglaublich schwer, in die Geschichte reinzukommen und zu verstehen, was vor
sich geht. Am Ende ergab dann alles einen Sinn, aber zwischendurch hatte ich
teilweise überhaupt keinen Schimmer, was da gerade passierte und das war
wahrscheinlich der Grund dafür, dass ich keine Motivation hatte weiterzulesen.
Erzählt wird
die Geschichte in zwei Zeitsträngen, die am Ende vereint werden – wo man dann
auch versteht, was der eine Strang mit dem anderen zu tun hat.
Tatsächlich
ist „Der Nachtzirkus“ eines dieser Bücher, bei denen man die ganze Zeit total
verwirrt ist und dann am Ende diesen Aha-Effekt hat, wenn man versteht, wie
alles zusammenhängt. Trotzdem hat es mein Leseerlebnis schon etwas gestört,
dass ich die meiste Zeit über nicht verstanden habe, was vor sich ging.
Was mir an
dem Buch gefallen hat, war die Atmosphäre – während man liest, fühlt man sich
stellenweise wirklich so, als wäre man Besucher im „Le Cirque des Rêves“ und
ich würde alles dafür geben, diesen auch mal besuchen zu dürfen.
Das Buch
allgemein hat eine eher mystische, geheimnisvolle Atmosphäre – ein bisschen wie
in einem Traum, wenn alles irgendwie keinen Sinn macht und ineinander verläuft.
Insgesamt
ist das Buch aber unglaublich gut durchdacht und hat mir auf jeden Fall
gefallen.
Schreibstil
Wie schon
gesagt, war die Atmosphäre in „Der Nachtzirkus“ sehr besonders, was vor allem
durch den Schreibstil verursacht wurde.
Erin
Morgenstern hat die Fähigkeit, Dinge so zu beschreiben, dass man sie als Leser
direkt vor sich sieht, wodurch sie auch die Sehnsucht in mir erweckte, den
Zirkus auch mal in echt zu sehen.
Wenn ich
ihren Schreibstil in einem Wort beschreiben müsste, würde ich wahrscheinlich
„magisch“ wählen – manchmal ein bisschen verwirrend, sehr bildhaft und
teilweise auch lyrisch.
Beim Lesen
hat man den Eindruck, als schreibe die Autorin schon seit Jahrzehnten
erfolgreiche Bücher, dabei ist „Der Nachtzirkus“ ihr erstes veröffentlichtes
Werk.
Charaktere
Für mich
waren die Charaktere sehr schwer zu durchschauen. Das Buch ist nicht aus der
Sicht eines bestimmten Charakters geschrieben, sondern es erzählt mal aus
jedermanns Sicht, wobei man aber nie ganz hinter die jeweiligen Motive der
Charaktere kommt.
Auf diese
Weise ist es schwer, sich in die Haut der Protagonisten zu versetzen
beziehungsweise eine Beziehung zu ihnen aufzubauen.
Dennoch sind
alle Charaktere – wie die ganze Geschichte – sehr gut durchdacht und ausgebaut.
Emotionen
Es gibt
andere Bücher, die mich emotional mehr gepackt haben als „Der Nachtzirkus“,
aber ich kann nicht behaupten, dass mich die Geschichte komplett kalt gelassen
hat. Besonders gegen Ende hin habe ich dann mitgefiebert, aber ansonsten kann
ich nur (mal wieder) sagen, dass mich das Buch vor allem wegen seiner Atmosphäre
gefesselt hat.
Insgesamt
Wenn ihr ein
actiongeladenes Buch für mal so zwischendurch lesen wollt, solltet ihr besser
nicht zu „Der Nachtzirkus“ greifen. Wenn ihr aber ein Buch sucht, das voller
Magie, Illusionen und mit einer wunderschönen Atmosphäre ist, empfehle ich euch
das Erstlingswerk von Erin Morgenstern sehr.
Obwohl ich
das ein oder andere Problem beim Lesen hatte, hat es mir am Ende doch gut
gefallen.

Execution
All in all, it took me a whole month
to get through „The Night Circus“ which is an incredibly long time compared to
how long it usually takes me for a book of this size.
I can’t say that I didn’t like the
book but it was really difficult for me getting into the story and
understanding what was going on. In the end everything made sense but in between,
I didn’t have a clue what was happening and that was probably the reason why I
didn’t have any motivation reading it.
The story is told in two different
time lines which are connected in the end – which is when I finally understood
what the one time line had to do with the other.
Actually, “The Night Circus” is one
of those books where you’re totally puzzled throughout the whole book and then,
when everything starts to come together, you have one of those aha experiences.
Nevertheless it did impair my reading experience that I didn’t understand the
book most of the time.
What I really liked about the book
was the atmosphere – while reading you really feel like you were a visitor at “Le
Cirque des Rêves” and I would give everything for the opportunity to visit it
someday.
In general, the book has a kind of
mystical, gloomy atmosphere – it reminded me a bit of the feeling when you’re
dreaming when nothing makes sense and everything is blurring together.
But overall, the book was amazingly
well thought through and I really liked that.
Writing
As I said before, the atmosphere in „The
Night Circus“ was really special what was especially due to the writing style.
Erin Morgenstern somehow manages to
describe things in a way that you as a reader can really see them. This is how
she avoke the longing to visit the circus in real life myself.
If I had to describe her writing
style in one word, I would most definitely choose “magical” – sometimes a bit
confusing, very vivid and partly lyrical.
While reading I felt like the author
had been writing successful books for centuries when in real life, “The Night
Circus” is her debut novel.
Characters
For me, the characters were very
hard to see through. The book isn’t written from a specific character’s point
of view, instead it’s told from kind of everyone’s perspective. Nevertheless
you never fully understand the character’s motives.
This is why it’s really hard to put
yourself in the protagonist’s places or to establish an emotional connection to
them
Yet, all characters – as well as the
whole story – are very well thought through and sketched.
Emotions
There are books that could grip me
more than „The Night Circus“ but I can’t say that I completely didn’t care for
the story. Especially in the end I was emotionally involved but other than
that, I can jst say that it was really the atmosphere that made up the whole
book.
Overall
If you want to read an
action-packed, gripping story, you shouldn’t pick up „The Night Circus“. But if
you are looking for a book that is full of magic, illusions and a whimsical and
wonderful atmosphere, I can really recommend Erin Morgensterns debut novel.
Although I did have one or the other problem, I
