In „The
Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender“ wird die Geschichte von Ava
Lavender erzählt, einem Mädchen, das mit Flügeln zur Welt kommt. Im Laufe des
Buches erfährt man ihre Geschichte, die ihrer Familie und noch so viel mehr –
ich möchte gar nichts genaues verraten, weil ich finde, das würde zu viel
spoilern.
Umsetzung
Es gibt
Bücher, die einen an seinen eigenen Fähigkeiten als Schriftsteller zweifeln
lassen, weil sie so einschüchternd gut sind.
Und dann
gibt es noch Bücher, bei denen man sich nicht einmal traut, eine Rezension zu
schreiben, weil man dem Buch sowieso nicht gerecht wird.
„The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows
of Ava Lavender“ ist so ein Buch. (Trotzdem sitze ich nun hier und
versuche mich an einer Rezension; seid also nicht zu hart mit mir!)
Der Roman
ist kategorisiert als magischer Realismus und das beschreibt es ziemlich gut:
Obwohl die Geschichte in der echten Welt spielt und auch historische Ereignisse
mit einbezieht, die sich tatsächlich so ergeben haben, ist die Magie so
selbstverständlich Teil dieser Welt, dass ich als Leser schon selbst daran
glaube.
Das Buch hat
nur 300 Seiten, aber trotzdem ist sind Geschichte und vor allem auch die
Charaktere unglaublich komplex und tiefsinnig – Leslye Walton hat eine Art, zu
erzählen, dass man das Gefühl hat, man kenne die Protagonisten schon ewig und
wäre selbst irgendwie Teil der ganzen Geschichte. Innerhalb dieser 300 Seiten
hat die Autorin eine komplette, wunderschöne Welt erschaffen, wie es andere
Autoren nicht einmal in einer ganzen Buchserie schaffen.
Wenn man
nach einem actiongeladenen, spannenden Buch sucht, ist „The Strange and
Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender“ definitiv nicht das Richtige. Vielmehr
findet man eine (wie der Titel schon sagt) merkwürdige, aber wunderschöne
Familiengeschichte, die vor allem von ihrer stillen Atmosphäre und den
liebenswürdigen, besonderen Charakteren lebt.
Schreibstil
Auch der
Schreibstil ist wunderschön. Lyrisch und bildhaft und tiefsinnig – Leslye
Walton schreibt, als hätte sie ihr Leben nichts anderes getan – dabei ist „The
Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender“ ihr erstes veröffentlichtes
Werk.
Man hat das
Gefühl, mühelos in die Geschichte hineingezogen zu werden und nachdem man das
Buch zugeschlagen hat, wünscht man sich, Teil dieser wundersamen, skurrilen
aber trotzdem schönen Welt zu sein.
Charaktere
Wie schon gesagt, sind die Charaktere
in „The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender“ unglaublich gut
skizziert. Ich finde es absolut verblüffend, wie man in so einem „kurzen“ Buch
so viele Charaktere so gut vorstellen kann.
Es sind die
Charaktere, die das Buch ausmachen – man kann eigentlich nicht einmal einen
Hauptcharakter festlegen, weil es eigentlich um jeden einmal geht und
jedermanns Geschichte erzählt wird.
Erzählt wird
der Roman aus der Sicht von Ava Lavender, aber es geht (vor allem am Anfang)
nicht unbedingt nur um sie.
Ihre
Großmutter, ihre Mutter und all jene, mit denen die Frauen der Familie Lavender
in Berührung kommen, machen Ava Lavenders Geschichte aus – und damit die
Geschichte des Buches.
Emotionen
„The Strange
and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender“ hat irgendetwas in mir ausgelöst. Es ist
kein Buch zum Weinen oder Lachen, aber trotzdem wahnsinnig emotional. Je weiter
man liest, desto mehr fühlt man sich verbunden mit der Geschichte und desto
mehr wird man hineingezogen – besonders die letzten 100 Seiten waren noch
einmal intensiv, aber insgesamt war das Buch für mich eine emotionale Erfahrung
der besonderen Art.
Insgesamt
Ich glaube,
„The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender“ ist ein Buch, aus dem jeder
etwas anderes mitnehmen wird, das aber trotzdem jeder auf seine Art irgendwie
liebt.
Es ist
unbestreitbar ein literarisch wertvolles, wunderschönes Buch, das mich sicher
noch lange nicht loslassen wird.

Realization
There are those books that make you
doubt yourself as a writer because they are so intimidatingly good.
And then, there are those books
about which you barely even dare to write a review because it won’t live up to
the book anyways.
“The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows
of Ava Lavender“ is a book like that. (And yet, here I am, writing a review –
please don’t be too hard on me!)
The novel is categorized as magical
realism and this description fits quite well: Although the story is set in the
real world and also includes real historical events, magic in this book is so
natural that I, as a reader, did almost believe it myself.
The book only has 300 pages and yet,
the story and especially the characters are incredibly complex and profound –
Leslye Walton describes everything in a way that makes you feel like you have
known the protagonists for a long time and you were somehow part of the story yourself.
Within those 300 pages, the author
created a complete, beautiful world how other authors can’t even manage in a
whole series.
If you’re looking for an action-packed,
gripping story, “The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender“ isn’t the
right book for you. Instead, you’ll find a (as the title already suggests)
strange and yet beautiful family story that particularly lives from its quiet
atmosphere and its loveable, special characters.
Writing
As well as the story, the writing is
beautiful. Lyrical and vivid and profound – Leslye Walton writes as if she didn’t
do anything else in her entire life – although “The Strange and Beautiful
Sorrows of Ava Lavender“is her very first published book.
You feel like your effortlessly
drawn into the story and after you shut the book you wish you were, once again,
part of this wondrous, whimsical and yet beautiful world.
Characters
As I already said, the characters in
„ The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender“ are incredibly well
drafted. I think it’s absolutely astounding how you can introduce so many
characters so well in such a “short” book.
It’s the characters that make the
book as beautiful as it is. Actually, you can’t quite determine a main
protagonist because in the end, it’s everyone’s turn to contribute to the story
in their own way.
Ava Lavender is the authorial
first-person narrator of the whole story although (especially in the beginning)
the story isn’t just about her at all.
Her grandmother, her mother and
everyone that, somehow, comes into touch with her family’s story, contribute to
Ava Lavenders story – and with that, the book’s story.
Emotions
„The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows
of Ava Lavender“did provoke some emotions in me. It’s not a book to cry or
laugh over but still, it’s incredibly emotional. The more you read, the more
you feel connected to the story and the more you are drawn into it – especially
the last 100 pages were quite intense but altogether, the book was a very
special experience for me.
All in all
I think „ The Strange and Beautiful
Sorrows of Ava Lavender“ is a book everyone can take something out of and
everyone can love in their own way.
It’s undoubtedly a literary precious and
